Real People Losing Real Weight
Susan Caldwell is a real person who lost real weight and a lot of it. As the young mother of two was making her way through the checkout line at her local Food Lion, the latest People Magazine, “Half Their Size” issue caught her eye. She was so captivated by the magazine, she left the store without her cart full of goodies.
So began Susan’s weight loss journey and lifestyle change. She began to watch what she ate and started walking in her neighborhood. Realizing she needed some help, she joined Tone Up, a women’s fitness studio, in North Raleigh.
Susan knew her success would be dependent on educating herself on nutrition and fitness. While looking for a personal trainer, she began doing her own research. She passed the time on the treadmill reading health publications and study materials. At the suggestion of a friend, Susan began studying the curriculum required to become a personal trainer. Here are a couple of Susan’s tips & tricks that helped her stay on track:
* Keep a “before” and “after” picture complete with clothing sizes attached to your refrigerator.
* When stocking your weakness foods such as cookies and chips, place them out of sight. Out of sight, out of mind!
* Occasionally browse saved People magazine for inspiration!
Susan kept the People magazine for two years until she felt confident she could part with it. She was so grateful for the inspiration, she wrote People Magazine to thank them for the yearly publication. They turned around and featured her in the 2008 "Half Their Size" edition.
Susan has come a long way since standing in that grocery line. She understands her weight loss was not an event but is a lifestyle shift that will always be challenging.
Since changing her own life, Susan's focus has turned to others. "The thought of being able to inspire other people, like it inspired me is an amazing feeling." She has since become an ACE certified personal trainer to help adults and is the founder of Hi5 Fitness for children and teens.
Susan and Be Active North Carolina share the same vision of empowering North Carolinians with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to lead physically active lives.
