Program Highlight: Get Caught Red Banded!
Below is a message we received from a PE teacher using Be Active red bands to encourage her 4th and 5th graders to be more active:
Hi,
I thought that you might be interested in a program that we have been doing with 4th & 5th graders at a couple of our schools using the beactiveNC Red Bands as rewards. The program has really got the kids & their teachers excited! The students get a small card with a list of 10 physical activities to complete (see attached sheet of 4 cards). For each activity completed & signed-off by a teacher or in some cases a parent, the child receives a bead to put on his/her shoelace to recognize the accomplishment. Once they have completed at least 7 out of 10 activities they are rewarded with a beactive NC red band.
The program is reasonably inexpensive -$1.00 per red band, a few inexpensive craft beads & some printing costs for the cards & posters (beactivenc has kindly let us use their logo etc). The main “ingredient” in making it successful is an inspired teacher – PE and/or otherwise. Each of our schools has chosen different activities for the students; ones that best reflect the school and their students’ family situations. One of the schools chose to encourage students to participate by offering “Workout Wednesday’s” with before school workout sessions offering such diverse sessions as pilates, tae bo and yoga.
We’re run the program for about 5 weeks. At one school more than 80 out of 160 participating kids got their Red Bands. 22 children completed 10 out of 10 activities.
Below is a message from Amanda Johnson, one of our (inspired) PE teachers after the first week of the program.
Kim Weatherby
Kim,
Hey Kim!! Great story! we talk so much in here about being healthy and making healthy choices that my students also always notice what I am eating.
Well, the get fit challenge is a huge success. The kids are really addicted to it. This morning I did a Tae bo class and had about 30 students..way more then I expected. I was proud. Also, the kids are taking it home and getting their families more involved in physical activity.
Anyways, I just wanted to update you. Things are going really well. I'm pumped!
Amanda
