News: Be Active North Carolina Receives $330,796 from the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission

Be Active North Carolina was awarded a $330,796 grant by the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission of Raleigh.

The funds are being used to expand the organization’s Active Steps Youth Program, targeting children in four counties where more than 30 percent of children ages 5-11 are overweight. The funds allow Be Active North Carolina to implement pedometer walking programs in physical education classes in 25 North Carolina schools.

"We have put together an amazing program that helps teach children and adolescents how to set physical activity goals and achieve them through teamwork with their classmates. The program teaches children the importance of physical activity and shows them exercise can be fun and easy. Children from low-income homes are most at risk for developing diseases related to physical inactivity, and providing this valuable resource to their schools increases the chances of changing their habits and attitudes about physical activity for a lifetime of good health."
