POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Development leads all fundraising efforts including, but not limited to, foundation and government grants, corporate sponsorships, special events, merchandise sales,
and has key accountability for securing the funding required for Be Active North Carolina, Inc. to
plan and implement strategies that advance the mission, goals, and objectives of the organization.
Specific responsibilities include promotion of the organization, execution of major fund raising
events, seeking and securing federal and private grants, identifying and securing corporate
sponsorships. The Director of Development will determine the appropriateness of diversifying
fundraising strategies for Be Active North Carolina. In addition, the Director leads the
communications, activity awareness, and policy advocacy activities of the organization. The
Director of Development coordinates efforts with staff, members of the Board of Trustees, and
volunteer committees to provide a comprehensive and successful resource development plan.
This is a senior level position, with supervisory responsibilities, and serves as a member of the
executive team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs all fundraising efforts including but not limited to foundation and government grants,
corporate sponsorships, and special events.
- Directs the communications, activity awareness, and policy advocacy efforts of the
organization.
- Cultivates strategic partnerships with other health-related organizations, corporations and
foundations in order to secure resources and advance the mission of Be Active North
Carolina, Inc.
- Coordinates all activities of the Campaign Cabinet, volunteers, staff and others as they relate
to resource development planning and implementation.
- Prospects for and develops relationships with until now, unidentified sources of future
funding for the organization.
- Creates and leads the resource development planning and evaluates the effectiveness and
relevancy of the plan throughout the year.
- Provides training in principles and techniques of fundraising for Board members, volunteers,
and staff.
- Orchestrates the availability and contributions of various members of Be Active North
Carolina, Inc. staff in order to leverage their contribution to the general fundraising efforts.
- Schedules and coordinates all meetings, working committees, cultivation events, and any
other meetings and events related to the resource development.
- Prepares all resource development materials and correspondence, including proposals, grant
submissions, donor appreciations, general files and correspondence, and follow-up materials.
Maintains all records such as communications, meetings, and call reports between all
solicitors (internal and external) and donors.
- Investigates and recommends the best and most efficient fundraising software available for
the purposes of the organization. Also, ensures that the staff is properly trained to maximize
the effectiveness of the software.
- Conducts research to compile profile information on individual, corporate, foundation and
other prospects.
- Maintains and updates a calendar of scheduled activities, and sends weekly reports to key
individuals, consultants, and solicitors.
- Develops and collects development-related materials including on-line research, queries,
newspaper articles on potential donors, etc.
- Supervises employees with various focuses including development, policy, special events,
and communications.
HIRING REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of five years of resource development and public relations experience is required.
Proven success in resource development. Extensive training, certifications, and/or degrees, or
equivalent experience, earned in associated professional areas. Practical experience is required in
program management, grant writing, grant management; and budgeting/budget management. A
depth of knowledge and relevant experience specifically relating to physical activity and health is
preferred. Incumbent should be extremely organized, able to multi-task on various high-level
projects, and capable of successfully executing details to fit the “big picture”. Must have proven
negotiating skills and the ability to proactively identify opportunities and resolve issues.
Excellent management/supervisory skills, organizational, planning, interpersonal, problem
solving, leadership and oral and written and communication skills are mandatory. To be
successful in this position, it is essential to have the ability to represent the organization and
communicate effectively with various audiences. Must be flexible, creative, self-starting, team
oriented and have sound judgment and decision-making skills. Demonstrated creative aptitude is
essential. Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a fast paced environment with the
ability to manage competing priorities. Proficiency with a major fundraising software package is
strongly preferred.
