Healthy Active Children Policy Trainings

The amendment to the Healthy Active Children Policy was adopted by the State Board of Education on April 7, 2005 to help promote a physically active environment for North Carolina students during the school day. The policy requires a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day for all K-8 students. The North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission (HWTFC) is supporting implementation of the HAC policy by sponsoring elementary and middle school teacher trainings and has also developed a content-rich web site (www.FitKidsNC.com) to provide resources to aid implementation. The regional trainings, administered by Be Active North Carolina, in partnership with the NC Department of Public Instruction, concentrate on providing the teachers with the necessary resources to implement daily physical activity into the their classroom curriculum.

Over the past month, Be Active North Carolina has conducted 8 statewide regional trainings to promote a train-the-trainer model. Teachers who have completed the trainings are labeled Healthy Active Children (HAC) Trainers, and will facilitate trainings in their home schools and districts. Be Active North Carolina will work with Central Office Contacts to schedule these local trainings during the 2006-2007 academic year. Trainers will use the information that was provided at the regional trainings to help all K-8 teachers become more familiar with the HAC policy and the resources available to them.
