You can make a difference in
your community by helping to coordinate physical activities that
the entire community can get involved with. Start a mall-walking
club, have a volunteer group that meets one a month to clean up
park areas and sidewalks, a great way to be physically active while
making it safe for others in your community.
Work with local leaders to ensure that physical activity opportunities
and the health of their communities is at the top of their agenda.
This will help to keep sidewalks, bike paths and green space will
be included in new planning and zoning laws.
Start a program to get your community more active. In Durham, NC
a group of concerned citizens began to work with local partners
to promote a physical activity incentive program named Be Active
Durham!. This program set a goal to "Move a Million Minutes"
as a city. This program was a success and they have worked with
Be Active North Carolina to provide a guide to starting an event
like this in your community.
